Barcelona could become one of the “7 Wonder Cities” of the world in 2014
Next year could see Barcelona become a “Wonder City”. The Catalan capital has been chosen as one of the 28 finalists to become one of the “7 Wonder Cities” of the world, an initiative created by the Swiss foundation New 7 Wonders.
This distinction aims to recognise the cities that best represent the milestones and aspirations of global urban civilisation, as well as fomenting debate on how these population nuclei should respond to present and future challenges.
In addition to Barcelona, the other finalist cities are: La Pau (Bolivia), Quito (Equator), Havana (Cuba), Mexico City (Mexico), Mendoza (Argentina), Athens (Greece), Bangkok (Thailand), Beirut (Lebanon), Casablanca (Morocco), Chicago (United States), Doha (Qatar), Durban (South Africa), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Istanbul (Turkey), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Kyoto (Japan), London (United Kingdom), Mumbai (India), Perth (Australia), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Prague (Czech Republic), Reykjavik (Iceland), St. Petersburg (Russia), Seoul (South Korea), Shenzhen (China), Vancouver (Canada) and Vigan (Philippines).
Bernard Weber, the founder of the organisation, declared that the choice reflected the diversity of urban society at a time when “more than half of the world’s population lives in cities”.
The list of the “7 Wonder Cities” will be revealed on 7 December 2014, after three knock-out stages, though you can already vote for your favourite cities on the foundation’s website and make Barcelona a Wonder City!
